In April 2026, Tobago will proudly mark a historic milestone — the 250th anniversary of the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, the oldest legally protected forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere. In anticipation of this momentous occasion, the Tobago Tourism Agency Limited (TTAL) brought the island’s lasting legacy of eco-tourism to the forefront at the 2025 Global Bird Fair, held from July 11–13 at Lyndon Top, Rutland, United Kingdom.
As one of the world’s premier annual celebrations of birds and wildlife, the Global Bird Fair attracts thousands of conservationists, photographers, and adventure seekers from around the world — all united by a shared passion for birding, biodiversity, and nature-based travel. Over the years, Tobago has cultivated a commanding presence at this prestigious event, consistently reaffirming its reputation as one of the most rewarding birdwatching and eco-adventure destinations in the world. In line with its strategic objectives, TTAL used this platform to deepen connections with the UK travel market, where interest in immersive, eco-conscious experiences continues to rise.
Tobago’s extraordinary appeal as a birding and nature-adventure destination was on full display — from its vibrant population of over 260 migratory and endemic bird species, to the 2020 designation of its North-East region as a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve, a global recognition of the island’s sustainable tourism efforts. Visitors were introduced to Tobago’s diverse eco-adventures, including guided birdwatching tours and nature trails through lush emerald rainforests, scenic biking paths for adrenaline seekers and relaxed travelers alike, and secluded waterfalls tucked deep in the forest.

The island also showcased a curated collection of its top birding hotspots and eco-retreats, including Shurland James Hummingbird Nature Park, Adventure Farm and Nature Reserve, Adventure Eco Villas, Cuffie River Nature Retreat, Kariwak Village and Holistic Haven, Blue Waters Inn, and Castara Retreats — each offering unforgettable encounters with nature.
This year’s showcase held special significance, setting the stage for the 250th anniversary celebrations of the Main Ridge Forest Reserve — and reinforcing Tobago’s enduring commitment to conservation. Visitors were captivated by the island’s story of environmental stewardship, brought to life by renowned birding expert Newton George, owner of Tobago Bird Watching and Nature Tours, who shared his deep knowledge of Tobago’s rich biodiversity and birding trails.

TTAL also had the honour of welcoming Tim Appleton, founder of the Global Bird Fair, for a special courtesy visit to the Tobago booth — a recognition of the island’s milestone and continued appeal as a premier birding destination. Beyond its on-site showcase, TTAL deepened its global network by engaging with prospective partners and key stakeholders — including representatives from BBC Wildlife, which is set to spotlight Tobago’s birding experiences in an upcoming digital campaign. This initiative is expected to expand the destination’s visibility well beyond the event.
Tobago’s powerful presence at the Global Bird Fair reaffirmed its identity as a destination where nature, culture, and community exist in harmony — offering travelers authentic, enriching experiences rooted in discovery and sustainability. As the 250th anniversary of the Main Ridge Forest Reserve approaches, Tobago is not just honouring its legacy — it’s leading by example, demonstrating how even small destinations can make a lasting global impact through authentic and purposeful tourism.
TTAL remains steadfast in its mission to grow Tobago’s footprint in the global birding and eco-tourism niche, through strategic partnerships and targeted marketing efforts.
