Join us in exploring HER story:
What motivated you to pursue a career in tourism, and how have you navigated the challenges or opportunities unique to women in the industry?
“Pursuing a career in tourism gave me an opportunity to meet new persons and learn of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It also gave me an opportunity to bring joy and put a smile on the faces of a wider population. I feel a sense of joy and achievement when persons walk up to me and say: ” Wow your products are amazing and the colours are so vibrant and rich”.”

Can you share a story where you felt empowered as a woman in tourism and how that experience shaped your career or perspective?
“I could remember one year going to TIC (Trade and Investment Convention) at the Centre of Excellence in Trinidad and the Minister of Trade Ms. Paula Gopee-Soon saw one of my tie dye tote bags which stated ” If you think this bag is beautiful u should see Tobago” and she held it, smiling and saying ” Yes I love this bag” . She told her assistant “We need to get some of these!”. From that day on I continued to make extraordinary quotes about Tobago.”
How do you believe women in the tourism industry are helping to reshape the way we view travel, cultural exchange, and tourism development?
“In my opinion women are taking the forefront in the tourism industry. More seminars and educational activities can be done to ensure that the women stay interested and encourage other women to come onboard.”
In your opinion, what steps can be taken to create more inclusive spaces and opportunities for women in leadership roles within tourism and hospitality?
“Continue to promote female leadership forums like the one TTAL is doing, so that women have a space to share experiences, strategies and best practices. Also, encourage banks/government agencies to offer funding programs specifically for women-led businesses within the industry.”

In your opinion, what are some of the untapped opportunities for women in tourism, and how can we encourage more women to explore these avenues?
“Some of the untapped opportunities for women in the tourism industry include but are not limited to reef tour operators, lifeguards and taxi drivers.”
What advice would you give to young women and girls aspiring to enter the tourism industry, and how can they use their unique perspectives to drive positive change?
“The advice I would give to any young woman or girl that wishes to venture into the tourism industry is trust God and always pray. Believe in yourself. Offer quality products and or services and promote your business. Be brave, take advantage of the opportunities given by the government and private stakeholders. If there are no opportunities for you, then create one. Do plenty of research for whichever field you intend to venture into, and having a good mentor would save you time and money.”
Kishawna, thank you for adding your bright, beautiful colours and tie dye expertise to our Honouring, Empowering, Revolutionizing… HER campaign.
