Our Honouring, Empowering, Revolutionizing… HER campaign continues to recognize some of the courageous women who dedicate their service to Tobago’s tourism industry. This series presents Danielle Stewart, the Co-owner of Frontline Flavors and the Owner of Tobago Fireside.
Frontline Flavors specializes in serving daily authentic traditional breakfast and lunch options, along with catering services for events like weddings, dinners, and business meetings. On the other hand, Tobago Fireside offers a true taste of Tobago, creating unforgettable, immersive, culinary experiences that feature indigenous dishes, live fireside cooking demonstrations, and a blend of local entertainment.
Let’s hear more of HER story:
What motivated you to pursue a career in tourism, and how have you navigated the challenges or opportunities unique to women in the industry?
“In 2023, I did a culinary demo for Food Blogger, Mark Wiens, but most importantly it was fueled by my love for cooking and trying to preserve our traditional Tobago dishes. This has been a significant turning point, sparking the idea to create a niche. By navigating the challenges unique to women in the tourism industry with passion, perseverance, and innovation, I have been able to add a new layer to our local tourism industry.”

Can you share a story where you felt empowered as a woman in tourism and how that experience shaped your career or perspective?
“Launching Tobago Fireside, Instant Chocolate Tea and graduating with an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts are three monumental achievements that have empowered me. I’ve been able to innovate, stay ahead of industry trends, and maintain authenticity all while navigating the competitive nature of the industry. These milestones were driven by my passion, creativity, and resilience, making way for the future generation.”
How do you believe women in the tourism industry are helping to reshape the way we view travel, cultural exchange, and tourism development?
“I comment on the field of Culinary Tourism:
Tobago’s food culture is one of the key attractions for visitors. Many women are spearheading culinary tourism initiatives by offering authentic culinary experiences that showcase the islands’ rich flavors, like using local herbs and spices to curate creole dishes. They are not only aiding in preserving culinary traditions, but also elevating Tobago’s food culture on a global stage.”
In your opinion, what steps can be taken to create more inclusive spaces and opportunities for women in leadership roles within tourism and hospitality?
“Focusing on skills development, networking, and collaboration!
We can create a more inclusive environment for women to rise to leadership roles within tourism and hospitality in Tobago. These strategies will help women gain the necessary qualifications and confidence to lead while allowing them to build powerful networks and form partnerships that can drive innovation and growth in the tourism sector.”

In your opinion, what are some of the untapped opportunities for women in tourism, and how can we encourage more women to explore these avenues?
“Digital Innovation: Women can develop digital solutions to enhance tourists’ experiences, such as apps for cultural tours, transportation, or interactive travel guides. By promoting digital literacy and offering training programmes in technology, women can learn how to create innovative digital products.
Inclusive and Accessible Tourism: Inclusive tourism experiences catering to people with disabilities, seniors, and other underrepresented groups is often overlooked. Women can take the lead in designing accessible accommodations, transportation, and tours, ensuring that our island is welcoming to all persons. The government and NGOs can offer funding to support the development of accessible travel solutions.”
What advice would you give to young women and girls aspiring to enter the tourism industry, and how can they use their unique perspectives to drive positive change?
“Young women and girls entering the tourism industry in Tobago have the potential to bring about transformative change. By embracing sustainability, leveraging technology, building networking, and promoting gender equality, they will create an experience that is inclusive, empowering, and aligned with the Tobago’s rich culture to shape the future of tourism.”
